Karl Lagerfeld has a very different design philosophy as he goes by the ‘less is more’ concept, and swears by objectivity, simplicity and elegance. He uses the cut and proportion as the main feature of the garment and occasionally adds details.
He says he is powered by creativity and energy, and for him, routine is a horror.
As the head fashion designer for multiple fashion houses, including his own brand, he is ‘always breathing new life into the original garments’, and he is very unique with all of his designs and he always loves a challenge.
In 2012, Lagerfeld partnered with Melissa shoes to make a collection of shoes, made out of plastic. Lagerfeld said that “plastic has a bad reputation”, which made this a challenge, but he wanted to turn this around and make plastic trendy. Karl Lagerfeld designed plastic ‘ice- cream’ shoes with different colors of plastic. The inspiration he got to come up with this unique design, which has never been made before is simply because “the heels look like ice-cream cones”.
When designing for the Chanel Couture Fall 2012, his cat, Choupette, inspired Karl Lagerfeld, in the designing process. The Siamese cat influenced Lagerfeld, and made a soft, but not furry, knitted couture bag.
In the 2012 Paris Fashion Week, the sea inspired Karl Lagerfeld’s collection. "Nothing is more modern than the oldest shapes of the history of the world – not of humans. The shapes of the sea are very modern and very inspiring. The shapes of the fishes, they are unbelievably modern”
As Karl Lagerfeld is one of the most influential designer’s in the world, many of his approaches to design is kept a secret and he doesn’t let too much information of his process slip into the public’s knowledge.
